Golf returns to the Renaissance Club for the 2024 Scottish Open beginning on Thursday. The first tee times come at 2 a.m. ET. The mid-July event has been held at the North Berwick, Scotland locale since 2019, and it is scheduled to hold the final tune-up before the Open Championship through 2026. Rory McIlroy is the defending champion heading into the Genesis Scottish Open 2024, and this will be his first start since he had to settle for the runner-up spot at the U.S. Open last month. Scottish Open 2022 winner Xander Schauffele is next on the PGA odds board at 8-1, followed by Collin Morikawa at 12-1 and Ludvig Aberg at 14-1. One major surprise the model is calling for at the Scottish Open 2024: Hovland, the reigning FedEx Cup champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Hovland has managed to secure just one top-10 finish this season, a T-3 showing at the PGA Championship in May.
Hovland's struggles can be directly attributed to his inability to score. Despite ranking inside the top 10 in strokes gained: off the tee (0.671) and putting average (1.712), Hovland has a scoring average of 70.38 this season, which ranks 107th on the PGA Tour. He's also finished T-25 or worse in each of his last two starts at the Scottish Open, which doesn't bode well for Hovland's chances to finish on top of the leaderboard. See who else to fade here.
Another surprise: Corey Conners, a massive 45-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 32-year-old has made all of his cuts this season and has two top-10 finishes in his last four starts. That includes a T9 at the U.S. Open, where the Canadian opened up the tournament shooting a 69 in the first round.
Conners finished 19th at the 2023 Scottish Open, but his current form suggests he could finish higher on the leaderboard. He ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: approach to green (0.854) and seventh in green in regulation percentage (70.90%).
