Review by Dawson Joyce ★★ 1
Beyond Borders is undoubtedly well-intentioned, not to mention well-acted and well-shot, but it ends up leaving a sour taste in your mouth due to the misguided decision to have a subject matter as sensitive as human suffering used as a backdrop for a romance that's dull, poorly executed, and fails to ring true,

Why I watched this one? Angelina Jolie of course. This was one of the few Jolie movies that I had not seen.
What is this one about? Jolie and Clive Owen play relief workers in some of the world's most dangerous places. They have an uphill battle as they try and help many people, but have to deal with wars, lack of food, lack of medicine and corrupt government officials.
My thoughts on this one? Jolie and Owen make a good screen couple...but the story tries to cover too much ground...as they jump from one continent to the next without really solving any of the issues. Obviously the story told in the movie is important....but the movie fails when it…

✅ 3.4 / 5 ✅ — Beyond Borders sheds light on a global crisis rather than seeking to entertain.
Beyond Borders isn't an entertaining film in the traditional sense. Instead, it is deeply sobering and profoundly moving. Martin Campbell shifts away from his usual spy and action genres to shed light on the desperate conditions many around the world endure daily, and the courageous men and women who strive to bring relief and hope to their plight.
Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen give exceptional performances, but they are not the focus as the extreme suffering and starvation of war-torn refugees seeking food and safety take center stage. Filmed on location in villages that had experienced real-life struggles similar to those…

Just the worst kind of tasteful, well-meaning junk.

using the suffering of people of colour as a way to introduce and tell a dull love story between two white people is insane. what were they thinking? tasteless.

As far as Clive Owen is concerned, great job! I thought it was an excellent performance. But speaking of Angelina Jolie, I firmly believe that they could have made a better cast. The main theme of the movie is something that makes you value what you have, I like that. And also the fact of raising awareness about what millions of people go through every day. I imagine that if this movie inspired someone, just one person, like Nick did with Sarah, this movie did its job.

The last third is so dumb, it ruined the whole movie

An earnest drama that feels like talking point homework rather than compelling drama. The cast is game, but they only point out how much the film feels lacking.
