CALL NOWWhich electric wheelchair is right for me?
Size, weight, physical prerequisites, spatial environment, and lifestyle: People are different—just like their requirements for an electric wheelchair. In the consultation at Ergonomic Care in Munich, we therefore determine your individual needs as precisely as possible in order to find an electric wheelchair that guarantees you maximum independence and mobility.
- Application area:Where do you want to use the electric wheelchair?
- Range:What is the maximum distance you cover at once?
- Drive:Front, rear, or mid-wheel drive significantly determines maneuverability, track stability, and suitability for driving in indoor and outdoor areas.
- Additional functions:Do you need an electric wheelchair with a standing function for rehab?
- Spatial conditions:Are your home and workplace barrier-free or wheelchair-friendly, or does the wheelchair need to be especially compact?
- Control:In addition to the electric wheelchair with joystick, more and more manufacturers offer alternative controls, so you can adapt the operation to your needs and, for example, drive the wheelchair using a finger, tablet, foot, head, chin, or mouth.
- Accessories:Do you need accessories like seat cushions to easily, comfortably, and safely navigate daily life?
Electric Wheelchairs for Indoor and Outdoor Use
The electric wheelchair for home must meet different requirements than the one for a trip to the supermarket.
- Small, maneuverable, and flexible: Electric wheelchairs for indoor use come with small wheels and batteries. Thanks to the compact dimensions, you can move effortlessly and independently at the workplace, in school, and within your own four walls.
- An electric wheelchair for outdoors features wide wheels and often a cushioned suspension, enabling a safe and comfortable ride over varying terrains. Thanks to a larger battery, you can also handle longer distances in the electric wheelchair for outdoor use without interruptions. A safety belt and rear-view mirror provide additional safety in traffic, and a lighting system is mandatory due to the electric drive.
- Increasingly, electric wheelchairs for indoor and outdoor areas form a compromise between compact devices for indoor use and full-grown off-road wheelchairs. If you opt for an all-around electric wheelchair, comprehensive consultation is even more important.
Electric wheelchair with standing function
Long periods of sitting can be stressful for the human body over time and can lead to health problems. An electric wheelchair with a standing function has additional motors that transport you to an upright position at the push of a button. Straps or seat brackets on the upper body, pelvis, and belt provide a stable standing position. An electric wheelchair with a standing function relieves vital organs, eases breathing, promotes circulation, and strengthens your cardiovascular system.
Foldable Electric Wheelchairs
Whether an electric wheelchair for outdoors or indoors: You reach a limit with classic electric wheelchairs at least when you get to an airplane. With a foldable electric wheelchair, you minimize the packing size and transport your aid easily in a car, train, or airplane, thus increasing your range of action.

Electric Wheelchair in Munich: Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
What does an electric wheelchair cost?
The costs for an electric wheelchair depend on the manufacturer, the features, and the necessary accessories and can range from 1,000 to 10,000 Euros. As a patient with a prescription, however, the health insurance covers these costs. You only have to make the statutory co-payment of 10 Euros. However, the health insurance only pays for the medically necessary aids. If you opt for a more expensive wheelchair with more comfort or additional features, you can cover the extra costs yourself. Thus, patients can, for example, equip their active wheelchair with a traction device.
When does health insurance pay for the electric wheelchair?
Electric wheelchairs, like active wheelchairs, glasses, or rollators, are aids within the meaning of SGB V, §33, if they are “necessary in individual cases to secure the success of medical treatment, to prevent an impending disability or to compensate for a disability“. The necessity of an aid is again determined by the treating doctor, who can prescribe the electric wheelchair like a medicine and justify it to the health insurance in the context of an expert opinion.
How do you charge an electric wheelchair?
Reputable electric wheelchair manufacturers use longevity batteries, which are optimized for consistent energy output over a long period. Therefore, to sustainably charge these batteries, you must follow certain rules that contradict normal charging habits. However, rest assured: At the pickup of your electric wheelchair at our medical supply store, you will definitely receive instructions on the proper use, maintenance, and care of the device.
How fast does an electric wheelchair go?
An electric wheelchair is allowed to reach a maximum speed of 15 km/h in Germany. In practice, however, health insurance companies rarely cover electric wheelchairs with speeds of 10 km/h. The standard speed for electric wheelchairs is 6 km/h. Private liability insurance typically only covers devices with this maximum speed. A higher speed is achieved by electric scooters, which can reach speeds of up to 15 km/h, but are not suitable as wheelchairs.
