Former US President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt Saturday during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
After gunshots rang out — one of which pierced the upper part of Trump’s right ear — Trump fell to the ground and Secret Service agents rushed the stage to surround him. They then brought him to his feet and whisked him away from the scene.
The shooter was killed by the Secret Service, the agency said. The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, and authorities told CNN that he was positioned on a building rooftop just outside the rally venue. One rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, was killed, and two others were critically injured.
Trump returned to the spotlight just two days later, attending the first night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. On Thursday, he called for unity as he accepted his party’s nomination for president.
“I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of almighty God,” he said.
